THE UNCONVENTIONAL APARTMENT

Situated in the urban elegance of Tardeo, a urban neighborhood in South Bombay, this house introduces itself with a striking gesture: a corten steel main door. The raw and industrial aesthetic not only hints at the client’s roots in the metal market but also sets the tone for the home—a bold interplay of materiality and design.

The entrance foyer, with its thoughtful ceiling lights, acts as a guiding path, leading visitors into the heart of the home—the living and dining areas. These social spaces, bathed in natural light from their east-west orientation, form the lively core of the house. The kitchen, with its breakfast counter seamlessly spilling into the dining zone, fosters a sense of connection and interaction across the home.

An unexpected twist awaits in the powder toilet. Here, the boldness of the house reaches its peak: a red-pigmented concrete pedestal basin takes center stage against black basalt flooring and textured dark grey walls. An arched ceiling, illuminated with indirect light, creates a moody, dramatic atmosphere—a striking contrast to the rest of the home’s palette.

Throughout the house, the flooring is crafted from Telangana stone, laid with a deliberate orientation along the true north-south axis. This design choice resonates with a deeper philosophy: this house serves as a humble reminder of its connection to the larger universal context, anchoring its design in both spatial and existential harmony.

The bedrooms exude elegance and individuality. Circular columns, clad in green piccolo, stand as sculptural anchors in the corners, their tactile presence balancing the open expanse of the rooms. In the parents’ bedroom, a Warli art painting stands out from a muted backdrop, lending a cultural and artistic depth to the serene space.

Each piece of loose furniture was custom-designed to make a statement. From the sleek black console to the concrete ledges and bespoke wall art adorning the TV wall in the bedroom, every element serves as a testament to craftsmanship and individuality.

Bathrooms throughout the house feature walls and ceilings finished in micro concrete, paired with pebble-wash stonecrete floors—a tactile, earthy experience that feels both minimalist and luxurious. Finally, the meticulous attention to detail, the interplay of raw and refined materials, and the distinct spatial narrative truly set this house apart—earning its name, the Unconventional House.
